Men’s T20 World Cup: Which teams have won the tournament?

The T20 World Cup is a cricket tournament held every two years, with the first edition played in 2007. India, England, and West Indies have each won the tournament twice, while Australia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have won it once.

The inaugural T20 World Cup took place in South Africa in 2007. A young Indian team, led by MS Dhoni, won the tournament, defeating Pakistan by five runs in a thrilling final at Johannesburg. Pakistan bounced back by winning the 2009 edition in England, where they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final.

England claimed their first T20 World Cup title in 2010, defeating Australia in the final. They made history again in 2022, winning their second title in Australia. This victory made England the first team to hold both the ODI and T20 World Cup trophies at the same time.

West Indies secured their first T20 title in 2012 by beating Sri Lanka by 36 runs. They became the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice, with a dramatic victory over England in the 2016 final in Kolkata. Carlos Brathwaite famously hit four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes in the last over to secure the win.

Sri Lanka won their first T20 World Cup in 2014, defeating India by six wickets in the final. Prior to this, they had finished as runners-up in both the 2009 and 2012 editions.

Australia, a powerhouse in ODI cricket with six World Cup titles, finished as runners-up in 2010 but finally won their first T20 World Cup in 2021, defeating New Zealand by eight wickets in Dubai.

India won their second T20 World Cup in 2024, going unbeaten throughout the tournament, which was held in the USA and the West Indies. They secured the title by defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final.

Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs in T20 World Cup history, with 1,292 runs, while Shakib Al Hasan is the leading wicket-taker with 50 wickets.
