Established in 1998, the Champions Trophy is an one-day international tournament featuring the top eight teams in the cricket rankings. Australia have won the trophy twice, in 2006 and 2009. India shared the title with Sri Lanka in 2002 and won it again in 2013, beating England in the final.

While the first two editions took place in Kenya and Bangladesh, then two non-Test playing nations, the Champions Trophy was later conducted in major cricketing nations like India, England and South Africa due to its success.

South Africa won the first edition in 1998, their only major trophy to date. In the 1998 final against West Indies, the Proteas won by four wickets as Jacques Kallis earned the Player of the Match award for his five wickets. He was also the Player of the Tournament for scoring 164 runs and taking eight wickets.

New Zealand claimed their only title in 2000 by beating India in the final. After India set a target of 265 runs, Chris Cairns scored an unbeaten 102 to help New Zealand win by four wickets, earning him the Player of the Match title.

In 2002, India and Sri Lanka shared the trophy after rain disrupted the final. Sri Lanka reached the final by beating Australia in the semi-final, while India defeated South Africa. The match was played on September 29, but rain interrupted the second innings, leading the match to go to a reserve day on September 30th. The rain stopped play in the second innings again, leading to the trophy being shared.

West Indies won the Champions Trophy in 2004, beating England by two wickets in the final. England batted first and scored 217 runs. West Indies, notably, were struggling at 147 for eight before Ian Bradshaw and Courtney Browne put together a partnership of 71 runs to secure the win.

Australia won their first Champions Trophy title in 2006 by defeating West Indies by eight wickets. Shane Watson was named Player of the Match for scoring an unbeaten 57 and taking two wickets. They won again in 2009, beating New Zealand by six wickets, with Watson as Player of the Match again, this time for scoring an unbetean 105.

India triumphed in the 2013 Champions Trophy, defeating England by five runs in Birmingham. In a rain-curtailed encounter, India scored 129 runs in 20 overs while England fell short by five runs. Ravindra Jadeja was the Player of the Match for his 33 not out and two wickets while Shikhar Dhawan, playing his first major competition, was named Player of the Tournament for scoring 363 runs.

The latest edition of the Champions Trophy took place in 2017, with Pakistan defeating India by 180 runs. Fakhar Zaman was named Player of the Match for his 114 runs, and Hasan Ali earned Player of the Tournament for taking 13 wickets. The next Champions Trophy is slated to be held in Pakistan in 2025.
