Serie A, Italy's premier football league, has a rich history that dates back to 1898, making it older than La Liga, Bundesliga, Premier League and Ligue 1. The league's champion is awarded the prestigious Scudetto and the Coppa Campioni d’Italia trophy.
The inaugural Serie A title in 1898 was claimed by Genoa, who triumphed over Internazionale Torino with a 3-1 victory. This first tournament was a knockout competition featuring just four teams: Genoa, Torinese, Internazionale Torino, and Reale Società Ginnastica di Torino. Till 1929, the format was straightforward, with regional and inter-regional rounds determining the champion.
Since the 1929-1930 season, Serie A adopted a round-robin format, where each team play every other team twice, once at home and once away.
Currently, 20 teams compete in Serie A, with the top four teams earning direct qualification to the UEFA Champions League. The fifth-placed team and the Coppa Italia winner secure spots in the UEFA Europa League. The bottom three teams face relegation to Serie B, with the top three teams from Serie B promoted to take their place.
Inter Milan are the reigning Serie A champions, having clinched their 20th title in the 2023-24 season. They edged out Juventus and AC Milan, two of their fiercest rivals. Juventus hold the record for the most Serie A titles with an impressive 36 championships, followed by Inter Milan with 20 titles. AC Milan have 19 titles. Genoa, the first-ever champions, have nine titles to their name.
Other notable clubs include Torino, Pro Vercelli, and Bologna, each with seven titles. AS Roma and Napoli have secured three titles apiece, while Fiorentina and Lazio have won the championship twice. FC Casale, ASD Novese, Hellas Verona, Sampdoria, and Cagliari Calcio have each tasted Serie A glory once. Juventus also boast the record for the most consecutive titles, having won nine in a row from 2011 to 2020. Juventus had won the 2004-05 Serie A title but they were later stripped of the title as they were involved in the 2006 Calciopoli scandal. The runner-up, AC Milan were also named in the scandal, hence the championship was not awarded to any club. Juventus were also the winners of the 2005-06 Serie A but it was stripped and given to Inter Milan.
