Persistent rain forced the Melbourne Stars-Perth Scorchers Big Bash League clash in Launceston to be abandoned with the teams sharing the points.

Perth batted first on Wednesday night but their innings was cut short at 6-158 in the 17th over when rain hit.

The Stars were set a revised target of 76 from six overs but just one over of play was possible before the heavens opened for a second time.

Both teams must bat for at least five overs to constitute a match.

Melbourne keep their undefeated record in tact after three matches, while Scorchers are yet to get on the board after two games.

After being sent in, Kiwi import Colin Munro (49 from 36) and Ashton Turner (39 from 17) were the Scorchers’ best with the bat.

They looked set for bigger scores but were both undone by the unlikely spin of Nic Maddison, who took 2-8 from two.

Maddinson had Turner edging behind to juggling wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran in the 13th over before Munro holed out two overs later.

Turner played a blinder. In the space of seven balls against Maxwell and Hilton Cartwright he struck five sixes, with the latter’s over costing 23

Liam Hatcher (2-17) had a good night with the ball and was on a hat-trick after getting rid of Joe Clarke and Mitch Marsh with his first two deliveries.

Melbourne missed the middle-overs control of Adam Zampa, who was rested having played a leading role in their opening two wins.

The Stars used an x-factor player at the 10-over mark, bringing in batsman Ben Dunk for spinner Tom O’Connell whose one over went for 15.

Under the new rule, teams can substitute out one of their starting XI, provided they haven’t batted or bowled more than one over.

The match was a missed opportunity for Scorchers’ coach, Adam Voges, who is in his final year of his contract since taking over from Australian coach Justin Langer.
