The Indian Super League (ISL) started in 2014, and since then, six different teams have won the title. Mumbai City FC are the current champions after beating Mohun Bagan Super Giant 3-1 in the 2024 final.

Atletico de Kolkata are the most successful team in ISL history, with three titles. Other past winners include Hyderabad FC, Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City FC, and ATK Mohun Bagan.

In the first season in 2014, Atletico de Kolkata became champions by defeating Kerala Blasters FC 1-0 in the final, thanks to a late goal from Mohammed Rafique. Despite finishing four points behind Chennaiyin FC in the league stage, they triumphed in the knockout rounds. That year, the league featured eight teams.

Chennaiyin FC claimed their first title in 2015, beating FC Goa 3-2 in a thrilling final. Stiven Mendoza shined for Chennaiyin FC, winning the Golden Boot after scoring 13 goals. Despite a slow start, Chennaiyin FC won four straight matches late in the season to qualify for the playoffs.

The 2016 season saw Atletico de Kolkata lift their second ISL title, once again defeating Kerala Blasters FC. This time, the final went to penalties after a 1-1 draw, with ATK winning the shoot-out 4-3.

In 2017, ISL was granted top-tier status by the Asian Football Confederation, replacing the I-League. That year, Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC joined the competition. Chennaiyin FC captured their second title, beating Bengaluru FC 3-2 in the final.

Bengaluru FC made their mark in the 2018-19 season, winning their first ISL title by defeating FC Goa 1-0 in the final. 

Atletico de Kolkata won their third ISL title in 2019-2020, becoming the first team to do so. They defeated Chennaiyin FC 3-1 in the final. In the 2020-21 season, Mumbai City FC won their first title, beating ATK Mohun Bagan 2-1 in the final at the Fatorda Stadium. That year, Mumbai City FC also won the League Winners' Shield, finishing the league stage at the top of the table, and qualified for the 2022 AFC Champions League. In 2020, ATK and Mohun Bagan merged to form ATK Mohun Bagan.

Hyderabad FC secured their first-ever ISL title in the 2021-22 season, defeating Kerala Blasters FC 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out. The final took place at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa.

In the 2022-23 season, ATK Mohun Bagan won their first title under their new name, defeating Bengaluru FC in the final. The match was decided by a penalty shoot-out, with ATK Mohun Bagan winning 4-3.

Most recently, Mumbai City FC claimed their second ISL title in 2023-24, beating Mohun Bagan Super Giant 3-1 in the final at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium.
