World Test Championship: Who has scored the most runs?

England’s Joe Root holds the record for the most runs in the World Test Championship, having scored 4,948 runs in 57 matches to date. Australian star Marnus Labuschagne follows in second place with 3,904 runs in 45 matches. 

Another Australian Steven Smith is third on the list, having scored 3,486 runs in 45 matches. Smith also scored a century in the 2023 WTC Final against India that helped the Aussies clinch the title for the first time. 

Ben Stokes, the current England Test captain, ranks fourth, amassing 3,101 runs across 48 games. He has also hit seven centuries along with 16 fifties. Stokes averages 37.81 in the 48 games that he has played in the WTC. Stokes’ 135 against Australia at Headingley in 2019, is considered one of the best knocks in Tests as he batted with the last man standing to chase down a total of over 350.

Pakistan’s Babar Azam is fifth, with 2,725 runs in 31 matches. Babar Azam has hit eight centuries in the World Test Championship and averages 52.40. His highest score is196 which he scored against Australia in 2022. Usman Khawaja, another Australian, takes sixth place with 2,686 runs in 32 games. Khawaja’s highest score in the WTC is 195* which he scored against South Africa in 2023. 

Zak Crawley of England stands seventh on the list with 2,560 runs in 41 matches. He averages 34.59 and has the highest score of 267 which he achieved against Pakistan in 2020 in Southampton. India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, is eighth, having scored 2,552 runs in 32 games. Rohit Sharma has hit nine centuries in the WTC and has a highest score of 212 against South Africa in 2019. He was the Man of the Series against the Proteas with 529 runs to his name. He also led India in the final of the 2023 WTC. 

Travis Head from Australia ranks ninth, collecting 2,510 runs in 41 matches. Head was the Man of the Match in the 2023 WTC final for his brilliant 163 against India. His innings was key in Australia winning the title for the first time. David Warner who retired from International cricket recently, completes the top 10 with 2,423 runs in 38 games. He has scored five centuries and is the only player to score 300 in a WTC match when he scored 335* against Pakistan in 2019. 

Australia lead the top 10, with five players—Labuschagne, Smith, Khawaja, Head, and Warner. England are well-represented too, with Root, Stokes, and Crawley. India and Pakistan each have one player in the ranking, represented by Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam, respectively. Notably, there are no players from New Zealand, Bangladesh, South Africa, or West Indies in the top 10 of the World Test Championship run-scorers list.

Known for his unorthodox style and resilience at the crease, Smith has consistently delivered standout performances, cementing his place among the top batters in the competition.
